Product type is one of the most powerful and most neglected fields in a Google Shopping feed. Get it right and Google understands what you sell and who to show it to. Get it wrong — or leave it blank — and your products compete for the wrong searches, or fail to show at all.
Product type is how Google reads your catalogue
Unlike Google's own product category taxonomy, product_type is your own classification of your catalogue. Google uses it as a strong signal for relevance and for structuring campaigns. A well-organised product_type hierarchy tells Google exactly how your range fits together, which improves how accurately your products are matched to searches — and gives you the structure to bid differently across parts of your catalogue.
When this field is missing or inconsistent — which it is on most feeds we audit — Google is left to guess. Guessing means wasted impressions on irrelevant searches and missed impressions on the right ones.
The problem is scale
Categorising a few dozen products by hand is easy. Categorising thousands accurately and consistently is not — and that is exactly the situation for the large-catalogue businesses where Shopping matters most. Inconsistent manual categorisation, done by different people over years, is one of the most common feed problems we find.
AI makes accurate categorisation at scale practical
This is a problem AI is genuinely well suited to. Given a product title and description, a model can assign an accurate, consistent product type far faster than a person, across an entire catalogue, without the drift that creeps in when humans do it by hand. We built our AI categorisation tool to do this at scale — turning a catalogue of thousands into a cleanly classified feed that gives Google the signal it needs.
It is unglamorous data work. It is also one of the most direct ways to get more of your catalogue serving on the right searches without spending a penny more on ads.
